In the article, "Enhancing Education Through Mobile Augmented Reality," Dr. Robert Joan discussed how cell phones and other mobile media has become indispensable in people's lives. He also talks about how augmented reality is implemented in sports on television, such as the score that shows up on the bottom or top of your television screen. This technology may seem new to some people, but when you think about it (like listed above), it has been around for many years. It is just getting better and better with each year. With this technology improving as it is, it brings new learning opportunities to an educator's classroom. Augmented reality can take learning to an entirely new and deeper level. In the article, it also discussed that producing augmented reality is cheaper than making a computer (Joan, 2014, pg. 9). He also explained that when you use augmented reality it brings in real-world aspects to gameplay and it can also be brought into the classroom. Using mobile devices and augmented reality can bring real-time information to students any place and anytime. This can help with differentiated instruction and to catch students up on skills that they may be struggling with. Dr. Joan also discussed how augmented reality can support higher order thinking skills and spark creativity also, by students design their own AR experience. He also discussed other ways that AR can be used in the classroom such as flashcards, going to a historic place in history, and looking at a virtual model. Dr. Joan also discussed that even though augmented reality is a great tool to use in the classroom, educators should still use traditional methods along with it. The article also discussed how AR has mainly been used for outdoor education it can be brought inside, but we need to make sure that there is enough space for the learning and consider what is in that space. For example, if a chair is there in the real space it should be used in the virtual reality space. Lastly, the article discussed how it is beneficial for learners. The biggest advantage of using augmented reality is that students will be able to connect their experiences to real-world contexts and it also takes learning to a deeper level.
I believe that as time passes, augmented reality will show up more and more in our classrooms. A lot of teachers at my school are not familiar with it so professional development will need to be implemented so that it will be used effectively. I think it is an excellent way to show students a historical site and get them involved in history. This will lead to students being more involved in class and gaining a deeper understanding of the lesson. Augmented reality is in the palm of our hands a mobile device, so why not implement it in education to enhance our student's learning experiences.
